BREAKING (Records): Canucks Kiefer Sherwood Smashes NHL Season Hit Record Versus New York

The NHL has a new season hit record holder. Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood, who has made his presence known in Vancouver since signing with the team last offseason, has surpassed Jeremy Lauzon’s record for most hits in a season by making his 384th hit of the season today against the New York Rangers. He now has sole position of first in the NHL for hits made in one season, and is trailed by Lauzon and Matt Martin (who has three of the highest-hitting seasons).

Made his 384th hit of the season on former Canuck Carson Soucy, at the start of the first period. Previously, he set the franchise record for hits in one season back in February, surpassing Luke Schenn’s 273 hits in the 2021–22 season.

Sherwood came into today’s game tied with Lauzon, having made 10 hits in Thursday night’s game against the St. Louis Blues to reach the record in 65 games played. Lauzon put up 383 hits in 79 games, while Sherwood still has the rest of today’s game and 12 more to increase his total. Prior to puck drop today, Sherwood averaged around six hits per game.

Many who followed the Canucks’ playoff run last season knew that Sherwood was a physical figure. In Vancouver and the Nashville Predators’ six-game series, he had 33 hits, with him making nine hits during two of them. Last season, he had 234 hits in 68 games played, good for 15th in the league.

The 2024–25 season has been one of many successes for Sherwood. Other than setting a new record, he has set a new career-high in goals and points with 15 and 29 respectively. He is averaging over a minute more of ice time (14:42) than his previous season high of 13:36. As well, spending stints alongside players like Elias Pettersson have given him more offensive opportunities, as he currently has 114 shots on the season.

Another NHL hit record that Sherwood could go for is the most hits in a single game, which is currently held by Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk (16). As it stands, Sherwood’s highest hit count in a game is 12.
