NFL analyst: New York Giants are 'stuck in struggle mode'
The New York Giants have fallen into disarray the past decade, logging in just two winning seasons and losing 10 or more games in the other eight.
Over that span (2015-2024), the Giants are tied with the Cleveland Browns for the third-worst record (57-106-1, a .351 winning percentage) in the NFL behind only Jacksonville (55-109) and the New York Jets (56-108).
The Giants' period of ineptitude and failure may be far from over. They have not been able to find a franchise quarterback and have spun through a total of six head coaches since 2015.
Mike Jones of The Athletic writes that the Giants are "stuck in struggle mode" with little light at the end of the tunnel.
They paid Daniel Jones when they knew he wasn’t the guy, and then released him a season-and-a-half later. They opted against paying running back Saquon Barkley when they knew he was special. John Mara is letting GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll run it back in a bad year to need a quarterback in free agency or the draft.
The Giants have gone dumpster diving to find themselves a quarterback after failing to land Matthew Stafford in a trade with the Rams. They are in the mix for three fading veterans (Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Joe Flacco) but those players are short-term solutions.
The Giants agreed to terms with Jameis Winston this week in hopes that he can ignite some magic, but Winston has a spotty track record. He is a player who can be as implosive as he is explosive.
The Giants' best bet is to find the right player in the 2025 NFL draft (preferably Miami's Cam Ward) so that they can begin to change the flailing narrative. But the easiest way to do that is to change the results. As we know, winning can cover a lot of warts.
General manager Joe Schoen has been busy in free agency, but that is mainly due to his first two draft classes, which have been subpar thus far. His free agent capital has largely gone toward replacing and/or upgrading players who have failed to live up to their draft status.
