BMX ramping up for spring fun in Moses Lake

Apr. 4—MOSES LAKE — Now that Spring is here, outdoor activities are ramping up, including BMX leagues. On April 4 and 5, Moses Lake BMX will hold multiple events for children and beginners.

This comes after new changes were made to the organization's offerings. They are starting two new leagues, one for beginners, at their open house this Saturday.

"New riders can come out, check out the track, learn about our new beginner's league program, and really how to get started in BMX. It's always beneficial to let the new riders ride with new riders," Moses Lake BMX Track Operator Jeff Niehenke said.

Niehenke said this will allow for more one-on-one coaching opportunities and family time. The Saturday event aims to draw novice riders or those wanting to try something new.

The first league will run during spring break and will take place all five days. This deviates from the typical training plan that spreads out across five weeks and takes place every Saturday, he said. However, the second league will be every Saturday.

Niehenke emphasized that Moses Lake BMX is welcoming to people of all age groups.

"Our motto in BMX is that no one sits on the bench," he said.

They have leagues for kids, beginners, and even people 60 or older. Niehenke said the schedule is very flexible in terms of how high or low someone's interest is.

"You can be really laid back and race once a week. You can race three times on a weekend. You can run around and chase national races." he said.

In addition to their annual state qualifier in May, they were also awarded the Golden Cup race, which will take place the same weekend as the state qualifier. The Golden Cup race is part of a northwest series that includes riders from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. The state qualifier will take place May 17, and the golden cup will follow May 18.

Niehenke shared that the best way to get involved if you can't make the open houses is to reach out on their Facebook page —facebook.com/moseslakebmx1709 — moseslakebmx.com or give them a call at 509-998-0100.
