Apr. 3—MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks soccer team gained a 2-0 victory in a Tuesday night game against West Valley High School.
"I felt pretty confident in the first half and then I kind of honestly slowed down in the second half," said Mavs player Felimon Sanchez. "But overall, it seemed to be pretty good."
Sanchez, Andrew Calderon and Miguel Arreola were highlighted as some of the key players for the Mavs in the game. Arreola was able to score the final goal of the night in the second half.
"We knew the middle field was going to be a little off today on their side, so we got composed, we took that on, and it was a great team effort again," said Arreola.
"I feel like (the guys are) getting more confident as time goes by," said Mavs coach Miguel Segura. "Everyone's getting to know their position well and the tactics so they're starting to click little by little."
Going into Tuesday's game, the team was looking to come back from a Friday loss against Sunnyside. The Mavs went into the game putting a focus on pressing and putting up an overall tougher defensive front, said Segura.
"We have a good team, and we know that," said Segura. "It's just a matter of time, just connecting a little more and learning more tactics."
Segura said a major lesson to take from this game was that if the players continue to put in their best effort from minute one until the end of the game, they will continue to have similar success to what they experienced Tuesday.
Moving forward, Segura still wants to put a focus on making sure the players are connecting as a team in the short time that they have.
"We only have two and a half months to work together out of the whole year, so it's a little hard, but we're working on it," he said. "I think that's going to be the biggest goal that we have right now is to play well as a team."
The Mavs will play their next game on the road Friday against Wenatchee at 7 p.m.
