Bishop Carroll girls, Forest Hills boys set for PIAA quarterfinal contests Saturday
The Bishop Carroll girls and Forest Hills boys each earned spots in the PIAA basketball quarterfinals Saturday with victories Wednesday.
Trips to the semifinals will be at stake Saturday.
High School Boys
Class 3A
7-2 Aliquippa (22-5) vs. 6-1 Forest Hills (25-2), at Armstrong H.S., Kittanning, noon
Forest Hills knocked off Keystone Oaks (83-58) and Mohawk (59-45) in the first two games. Sophomore Dylan Stohon netted 26 points against Mohawk. The Rangers, who have won five straight games, overcame a slow start to take the lead for good in the third quarter. Junior Brandon Gregovich supplied 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Chase Williamson and Stohon each dished out three assists, and sophomore Easton Gramling totaled three steals.
Stohon, with more than 1,000 career points, averages 21.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Gregovich adds 14.9 points and 6.2 boards. Junior Koy McGough, who is nearing 1,000 career points, chips in 14.4 points and 5.0 assists a contest.
Forest Hills is 8-9 in the PIAA tournament. Three of those wins have come in the past two seasons. This is the first time the Rangers advanced to the state quarterfinals in program history.
Aliquippa defeated Westmont Hilltop (73-40) and Mercer (64-37). Junior guard Josh Pratt tallied 30 points against Mercer. Junior Qa’lil Goode added eight points, 11 rebounds, six steals, five assists and three blocks.
The other starters are senior Michael Gaskins, junior Marques Council and freshman Jeremiah Pratt.
Aliquippa has won 14 District 7 crowns. The Quips claimed the 2024 PIAA Class 2A title. Aliquippa is 99-28 in the PIAA tournament. The Quips earned state titles in 1949, 1989, 1994, 1997, 2016 and 2024. The program finished as state runners-up in 1986, 1987, 2001, 2007, 2015, 2022 and 2023. This is the Quips’ 29th trip to the state quarterfinals.
The winner will meet the 3-1 Trinity/7-1 South Allegheny victor March 22. South Allegheny beat Aliquippa for its first District 7 title 37-35 March 1.
High School Girls
Class 1A
6-2 Bishop Carroll Catholic (20-7) vs. 6-4 Williamsburg (22-6), at Altoona H.S., noon
Bishop Carroll knocked off Coudersport (77-32) and Farrell (54-22) in the first two contests. Against Farrell, sophomore Adelyn Myers supplied 22 points, with 14 coming in the second half. Sophomore Ava Pablic scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Myers has 46 points in two state tournament games.
Pablic has 31.
Myers and Pablic lead the Huskies in scoring this season.
Freshman Emily Lucko has been a consistent performer this year.
Bishop Carroll won state titles in 1987, 2002 and 2003.
Williamsburg defeated previously unbeaten District 7 champ Union Area (49-33) and Otto-Eldred (47-36). The Blue Pirates are in the quarterfinals for the fourth straight season.
Sophomore Lilly Gorsuch netted a game-high 17 points against Otto-Eldred. Senior Anastasia Ranalli added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior LeeAnna Royer chipped in 10 points.
For the season, Gorsuch averages 16.5 points and 8.6 boards per contest. Royer added 16.3 points, 4.6 assists and 3.8 steals per game. Ranalli nets 10.5 points and 6.5 boards a contest.
Williamsburg won a state title in 1997. The Blue Pirates advanced to the 2024 semifinals before falling to eventual state champ Bishop Guilfoyle.
The winner will face the 6-3 St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy/6-1 Bishop Guilfoyle Academy victor March 22. That game starts at 1:30 p.m. inside Altoona Fieldhouse after Bishop Carroll and Williamsburg play. All four teams left in the bottom part of the Class 1A girls bracket are from District 6.
Bishop Carroll beat St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy 57-52 Dec. 27 and 68-63 Feb. 22 in a District 6 semifinal. Bishop Guilfoyle defeated Bishop Carroll 50-27 Jan. 3 and 61-44 Feb. 26 in the District 6 title game.
