PIAA H.S. GIRLS BASKETBALL: Marian falls to Berlin Brothersvalley in 2A quarterfinals
GETTYSBURG — Marian’s state run came to an end in the PIAA Class 2A girls’ basketball quarterfinals, Friday.
The Fillies (23-5) came up short 57-46 to Berlin Brothersvalley at Gettysburg Area High School.
“This is something we can build on,” said Marian’s head coach Damian Fritz. “Both teams are going to continue to work, hopefully we can see each other again.”
Marian set the tone first as sophomore guard Deanna Pugh nailed a triple to put the Fillies up 3-0. Berlin came back and went on a 5-0 run after sophomore sensation Coral Prosser hit two free throws to give the Mountaineers a 5-3 lead.
Tied 7-7 late in the frame the Mountaineers took a 9-7 lead at the end of one as sophomore Elena Ritchey hit a layup with three seconds remaining.
Marian opened the second frame on a 5-0 run to take a 12-9 league thanks to another triple by Pugh. Berlin responded, going on their own 5-0 run to take a 15-12 lead after a Ritchey bucket down low.
The Fillies tied the game up 16-16 with 3:02 left in the second quarter as junior Olivia Serfass scored two. Serfass was active in the frame scoring six points for the Fillies.
After two free throws by Berlin. Marian tied it up again this time with 46.4 seconds left. Pugh swished two free throws to tie the game up at 18. The Fillies would then take a 20-18 lead with 8.2 seconds when Serfass hit two more free throws.
The Mountaineers (25-2) responded right back as Prosser came down court and hit a triple at the buzzer, to put Berlin up 21-20 at the half.
“I was proud of the effort,” said Fritz. “Our mindset was right to close out games in playoff basketball; it’s just a matter of who’s going to execute more than the other.”
The Fillies came out ready in the second half and junior guard Addy Fritz caught fire.
The sharpshooter scored 14 points in the frame including four triples.
Fritz got her first points of the night at the 3:24 mark to put Marian up 31-28. Fritz went on her own 5-0 run as she scored on a layup and swished another triple to put Marian up 36-32, getting Fillies fans up on their feet with excitement.
Berlin cut the lead to 38-36 late in the frame. Fritz came down court and connected on another three ball with three seconds left to give Marian a 41-36 lead at the end of three.
“I thought we played a really good three quarters,” said head coach Fritz. “For three quarters we did everything we said we would and worked on.”
Fritz knew his team had to put together a full four quarters to secure the win. Berlin caught fire in the final frame and all Fritz could do was tip his cap.
The Mountaineers took control in the final frame going on a 16-0 run to take a 52-41 lead. The Fillies didn’t score their first points in the final frame until the 1:24 mark when Serfass scored two down low.
Prosser led Berlin scoring nine points in the frame. The Mountaineers outscored the Fillies 21-5 in the fourth quarter.
“They hit some big shots in that fourth quarter,” said Fritz. “Offensively, we didn’t execute in the first two to three minutes.”
Prosser led Breslin with a game-high 28 points. Fritz and Serfass led Marian with 14 points each.
There is no doubt that Marian will be back next year. The Fillies will return nine players off this year’s quarterfinals roster.
