Berlin Brothersvalley girls use 16-0 run to begin 4th, down Marian Catholic
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Berlin Brothersvalley girls basketball team rallied from a five-point deficit after three quarters by going on a colossal run to begin the fourth to defeat Marian Catholic 57-46 during a PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal at Gettysburg High School Friday night.
“I just told the girls that the only people that can win the game are you guys as a team,” Berlin Brothersvalley coach Rachel Prosser said. “We struggled to score, but we played good defense. We faced some adversity, and our girls are learning to grow from that.”
A 16-0 run to begin the fourth pushed the Mountaineers in front to stay.
Berlin Brothersvalley has won 24 straight games and is 26-2. The Mountaineers will face District 2 champion Mountain View, a 32-14 winner over District 11 champ Williams Valley, March 21 in a semifinal.
This is the program’s second trip to the semifinals in the past three seasons.
District 11 runner-up Marian Catholic was in the quarterfinals for the third straight year, looking for its first win.
Berlin Brothersvalley struggled shooting in the opening eight minutes and turned the ball over seven times. Sophomores Elena Ritchey and Coral Prosser led the Mountaineers with four points each. Prosser picked up two fouls. Berlin Brothersvalley led 9-7 after the first quarter.
Trailing 20-18 in the final minute of the second quarter, Prosser slipped off a screen and drained a trey at the buzzer for a 21-20 lead.
Olivia Serfass and Deana Pugh led the Fillies with six points each through 16 minutes.
Marian Catholic’s Addison Fritz knocked down four 3-pointers in the third and tallied 14 points. The Fillies led 41-36 after a 21-15 advantage in the third.
Freshman Bryn Prosser canned two treys and Coral Prosser added one to jumpstart that 16-0 run to begin the fourth. Lexi Foor added another triple and Coral Prosser totaled four points as the Mountaineers led 52-41.
Serfass stopped the run, but Coral Prosser got fouled and hit one of two. Ritchey was there to grab the miss and put it back in.
Berlin Brothersvalley finished the fourth with a 21-5 edge.
Ritchey posted a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.
“We just needed to focus on us winning each possession and getting stops,” said Coral Prosser, who tallied her 1,000th career point in the York Catholic game Tuesday. “We had everybody step up in that final quarter. Bryn hit two big shots, Lexi had a big shot and Elena (Ritchey) was just so good in that final quarter and the game. We found a way to win tonight.”
“I am proud of the girls – they never gave up and found that way to win,” Coach Prosser said. “Proud mom moment with Coral tonight. She works so hard at the game. Elena was huge rebounding and scoring, but the other girls stepped up and hit big shots in that final quarter.”
Bryn Prosser, Coral Prosser and Foor each made two 3-pointers.
