Class A girls state basketball roundup: Wagner comeback falls short against Sioux Valley
Mar. 14—SPEARFISH, S.D. — After trailing by double-digits in the second half, the Wagner girls basketball got within three points of Sioux Valley in the consolation round of the Class A girls state tournament in the fourth quarter.
However, the Red Raiders' comeback fell just short in their 56-46 defeat to the Cossacks on Friday.
Sioux Valley maintained control through three quarters, taking a 42-32 lead into the fourth quarter. However, Wagner burst into the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run in 90 seconds to flip momentum its way only trailing 42-39.
The Red Raiders would keep it close, only trailing by six points 1:27 left. However, the Cossacks closed the game with four straight points, shutting down the Red Raider comeback attempt in the final 90 seconds.
Keyra Kruse led Sioux Valley in three individual categories with 18 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Amari Ward 12 points, four steals and three rebounds. Talya Vincent added 11 points and dished out four assists.
Ashlyn Koupal led Wagner with a game-high 24, five assists and four rebounds. Mateya Bruguier finished with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting, all from 3-point range. The Red Raiders also finished shooting 43% from the field, higher than Sioux Valley's 40%.
Sioux Valley (20-5) moves on to the fifth-place game to play Mobridge-Pollock at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, while Wagner (17-7) meets Mount Vernon/Plankinton in the seventh-place game at 1 p.m.
After falling behind by 10 points in the first quarter, Mount Vernon/Plankinton was never able to make up the deficit, losing to Mobridge-Pollock 50-40 in the consolation round of the Class A girls state basketball tournament in Spearfish on Friday.
MVP didn't go away quietly, slowly chipping away at the lead through the second and third quarters. The Titans got close in the fourth, shrinking the deficit to only five points as momentum seemingly swung toward their corner. But, the Tigers finished the game on an 11-6 scoring run to shut down the comeback.
Blake Thompson led the Tigers with 18 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double showing. Charley Henderson had a big impact on both ends of the floor with 11 points, five steals, three rebounds and three blocks.
Reagan Rus finished with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Titans with four steals as well. However, she struggled to get going from the floor, finishing 3-for-7 shooting and 7-for-14 from the free throw stripe. Taryn Hegg and Layce Bruns each added eight points.
Mobridge-Pollock (19-4) faces Sioux Valley in the fifth-place match at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, while MVP (19-6) faces Wagner in the seventh-place game at 1 p.m.
