Lincoln Christian 50, Locust Grove 31
Lincoln Christian and Locust Grove were supposed to begin their Class 4A state semifinals game at 7:30 p.m.
But earlier games on the schedule got delayed due to power outages at State Fair Arena. And by the time they tipped off, it was just past 9 p.m.
Maybe that's why the contest got off to a drowsy start for both teams. Shots clanked off the rim, passes lacked zip and the score read 5-5 midway through the first quarter.
But Lincoln Christian woke up after that to earn a 50-31 win, and Alexis Leyva provided the adrenaline shot. With just a few seconds left in the opening quarter, the junior guard splashed a 3-pointer that fired up her teammates.
The deep bomb helped spark a 19-1 run by Lincoln Christian, which booked its ticket to the championship game. It'll face either Fort Gibson or Douglass at 9:15 p.m. Saturday.
Leyva also scored Lincoln Christian's first bucket of the second quarter when she muscled her way into the lane for a layup.
That brought her total to seven points, which already surpassed her season average of 6.3 points. And as she got back on defense, she continued to hype up her teammates.
"Let's go," Leyva hollered.
Leyva's energy was infectious, and it clearly rubbed off on Audrey Hopkins.
The senior sank a nifty reverse layup with six minutes left in the third quarter. And when a 3-pointer by junior Kayli Atkinson bounced off the front iron, Hopkins was there to clean it up for the putback.
Claire Hooker did her best to wake Locust Grove's offense up. After being held to just two points in the first three quarters, the Lady Pirates' go-to scorer came alive in the fourth.
Hooker finished an and-one layup, and she cashed in on a baseline floater a few possessions later.
But the deficit was insurmountable, and Leyva fittingly dribbled out the clock as the final buzzer sounded.
Hopkins finished with 13 points and six rebounds for Lincoln Christian. Leyva recorded seven points and three assists.
