Class B girls state basketball roundup: Parkston edges Deubrook Area in overtime
Mar. 14—HURON, S.D. — In the second overtime game of the Class B girls state basketball tournament, the Parkston girls basketball team edged Deubrook Area 56-52 in Huron on Friday.
The two teams were neck-and-neck for the entire game, with regulation proving not enough to decide a winner. But in the overtime period, the Trojans were superior, outscoring the Dolphins 6-2 to clinch a spot in the fifth-place game on Saturday. Parkston also forced 25 turnovers which led to 22 points.
With just over a minute to go in the game, the Dolphins held a three-point lead. But Berkley Ziebart hit a game-tying 3-pointer and later Keeara Oakley gave the Trojans a two-point lead with 13 seconds left. However, Deubrook found a basket with just a few seconds left to force overtime.
Then Parkston controlled the overtime period, holding Deubrook to only 1-for-6 shooting in the final four minutes of play. Oakley also scored four of her team-leading 17 points in overtime.
Ziebart finished with 16 points, six rebounds and five steals while her sister Lauren Ziebart had nine points with three rebounds, assists and steals. Morgan Maxwell added eight points.
For the Dolphins, Mataya Gouws played nearly the entire matchup and finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting with eight rebounds. Matte Bauman had eight points and five rebounds.
Parkston (20-5) has a contest with Lyman in the fifth-place game at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday while Deubrook Area (18-7) faces Harding County in the seventh-place matchup at noon.
Despite leading by as much as 15 in the second half, Lyman needed to stave off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt from Harding County to claim a 57-48 victory in the consolation round of the Class B girls state basketball tournament on Friday.
After leading by two at half, the Raiders opened the third quarter on a 13-0 scoring run to take full control of the game, taking a 35-20 advantage with three minutes remaining in the third. However, the Ranchers worked their way back, eventually cutting the lead to only six points in the fourth quarter.
However, Lyman never wavered and took back control, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Brooke Palmer with less than three minutes to go that extended the lead back to double-digits and out of reach.
The Raiders shot 46% from the field as a team, which included a 31% mark from behind the arc. Bree Smart paced Lyman with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting with four rebounds. Mak Scott finished with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double with two blocks and steals. Brooke Palmer had 12 points and six rebounds, and Jordyn Scott finished with 11 points.
Kamry Padden finished with a team-high 15 points, three rebounds and three steals for the Ranchers. Macey Wendt and Kaylen Padden each had 11 points.
Lyman (20-4) meets familiar foe Parkston in Saturday's fifth-place match at 1:45 p.m. while Harding County (21-2) faces Deubrook Area in the seventh-place match at noon.
