The Ada High School boys golf team didn’t put its best putter forward during a damp, windy outing Thursday at the Southern Oklahoma Invitational.
The Cougars finished 12th — in the middle of the pack — with a score of 361. Ada was just one stroke behind Lawton MacArthur who was 11th at 360.
The tournament was hosted by the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club.
Plainview won the team title with a score of 308 and Marlow was runner-up at 314. Velma-Alma followed at 315 followed by host Duncan and Elgin, who tied with identical 328 scores.
Ada coach Robbie Powell refused to use the weather conditions as an excuse for the Cougars’ overall outing.
“It was a tough day weather-wise and we played poorly. To say I was disappointed in the performance would be an understatement. We have a long way to go to be a competitive team,” he said.
Ethan Travis of Marlow won the medalist crown with a 72. Jace Chaney of Plainview and Jagger Sanner of Velma-Alma were a stroke back with identical 73s and Cooper Watson of Lawton MacArthure was fourth with a 74. Hudson Hobbs of Plainview and Bryce Freeman of Tuttle were next with a pair of 75 scores.
Ada sophomore Drake Kanuch paced the Cougars with a 78. No other AHS player broke 90. Couper Taylor-Rogers shot a 91 followed by Kash Taylor-Rogers with a 93, Kale Fuller with a 98 and Brant Vest at 103.
The Cougars are back in action Monday at the Jenks Invitational, hosted by the Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow.
