The 2025 NFL draft is approaching, and the Chargers still have work to do. General manager Joe Hortiz will be responsible for rounding out the rest of the roster.
Hortiz did a tremendous job in 2024 in his first draft in the new role, so we'll see if he can replicate that kind of success. NFL Media's Chad Reuter detailed the most ideal first two picks for the Bolts in the upcoming draft.
1st round (22nd overall): Donovan Ezeiruaku, EDGE, Boston College
The re-signing of Khalil Mack helps the position immensely, but the Chargers need a long-term answer along the edge. Ezeiruaku brings just that, and there's enough depth in this room to allow him to develop in Year 1.
He wreaked havoc in his final collegiate season, as he was a First-Team All-American and won ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Ezeiruaku racked up 16.5 sacks, 20.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and 80 total tackles. That kind of production, led by his sizably long arms, should translate well to the NFL and would be a great first pick for the Chargers.
2nd round (55th overall): Mason Taylor, TE, LSU
Chargers fans hope the team will land Colston Loveland or even Tyler Warren in the first round. Those two are everyone's top guys at the tight end position, arguably Los Angeles's biggest need.
Unfortunately, it seems likely that neither of them will make it to the 22nd overall pick. No other tight end is worthy of that first-round selection, leading to the backup plan. Taylor was productive in all three seasons for LSU, totaling 129 catches for 1,308 yards and six touchdowns.
He is polished enough to become an immediate target in the middle of the field for quarterback Justin Herbert. These two picks may not be the flashiest, but each of them would have the potential to be immediate contributors for the Chargers.
