Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Should You Help Minrathous Or Treviso?
As you progress further into the campaign in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you'll have to make a lot of decisions. One of these happens to have major ramifications, which affect companions and regions. Here's our guide on whether you should help Minrathous or Treviso in Dragon Age: The Veilguard as part of the On Blighted Wings/On Deadly Wings quest. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains spoilers.
Should you help Minrathous or Treviso in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Make no mistake: The On Blighted Wings or On Deadly Wings quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard might have one of the most pivotal moments just a few hours into the campaign. Your decision here can impact not just the layout of a city, but also future quests, vendor items, companion abilities, and romance options.
When do you get the choice to help Minrathous or Treviso?
The choice to help Minrathous or Treviso in Dragon Age: The Veilguard occurs just after a quest called A Warden's Best Friend, which is where you get to recruit Davrin. The moment you return to the Crossroads, you're told that both cities are under attack by blighted dragons.
Naturally, your companions who live in those cities want you to rush to aid the innocents. Neve wants you to save Minrathous, while Lucanis implores you to head to Treviso.
How do these quests play out?
If you pick Treviso, you'll get a quest called On Deadly Wings. Conversely, choosing Minrathous leads to a quest called On Blighted Wings.
Both missions play out similarly in that you need to head to the marked location to battle a blighted dragon. In Treviso, you take on the frost-infused Corius the Icetalon; in Minrathous, you face the fire-breathing Seartooth Vyrantus.
You won't actually get to defeat the dragons at this point, as they'll fly away. The city that you chose will be saved, so you don't have to worry. As for the city that you didn't help, well, that's another story.
Consequence: Unavailable companion
If you choose the help Minrathous in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Neve will be ecstatic and you'll gain a huge approval boost with her. However, Lucanis will be unavailable for some time.
The opposite happens if you help Treviso: Lucanis will like your decision, but Neve will be unavailable until you progress a bit further in the campaign.
Consequence: Hardened trait and romance implications
Another consequence of your decision is that either Neve or Lucanis will gain the "Hardened" trait. It has the following permanent effects:
- The companion will no longer be able to use their support/healing ability. Any skill points allocated to that ability will be refunded.
- A few passive perks for their offensive abilities become more effective (i.e. higher damage).
- Relationship progress becomes slower.
On the subject of relationships, we opted to save Minrathous during our main playthrough. Because Lucanis felt abandoned, we no longer saw romance dialogue options (i.e. heart replies) as we continued our campaign. You can learn more in our companion romance mechanics guide and Neve romance guide.
Consequence: Decrease in faction strength
Choosing to help Minrathous or Treviso also affects the faction that has its base of operations in the city:
- If you couldn't save Treviso, the Antivan Crows suffer a -100 penalty to faction strength.
- It's worse if you weren't able to aid Minrathous, as the Shadow Dragons get a -250 penalty to faction strength.
Consequence: Blighted city and dead or dying NPCs
But we're not done yet. The biggest difference you'll notice is the layout of either city. Due to the dragon attack, the blight has spread rapidly all over the settlement. Any beacons/fast travel points that you previously found need to be discovered again, as though the "fog of war" has blanketed the territory. Some sections of the city will also have blight pods that need to be destroyed if you wish to access those areas.
Moreover, these ramifications extend to some NPCs, too:
- A blighted Minrathous will allow the Venatori to ransack the Shadow Dragons' base of operations, leading to the death of the quartermaster vendor. Also, the commander, Viper, will be afflicted with the blight.
- If Treviso is corrupted by the blight, then some members of the Antivan Crows will have the disease as well. This includes Chance, the quartermaster NPC and quest giver.
We hope our guide on helping Minrathous or Treviso in Dragon Age: The Veilguard prepares you for this pivotal moment in the campaign. Be ready to face the consequences, since there's no going back.
The lands of Thedas are under threat from formidable foes, including some menacing elven gods, and it's up to Rook and their allies to save the day. For more tips and tactics, you can visit our Dragon Age: The Veilguard guides hub.
