Yellowjackets report: UWS softball piles up wins in Florida

Mar. 17—Were it not for Westfield State, Wisconsin-Superior would had a perfect run through the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic last week.

The Yellowjackets lost games 11-6 and 10-1 to them but defeated eight other opponents, most of them soundly, in the event in Naples, Florida.

On Monday, March 10, UWS lost 11-6 to Westfield State despite 11 hits, including a homer from Ellie Macal, one of four players with two hits in the game.

However, later in the day, UWS routed La Roche 18-4, including a 3-for-3 game with four RBIs from catcher Zoe Thomson.

After a day off, Westfield State defeated UWS 10-1 on Wednesday, but again the Yellowjackets recovered, taking down Lesley 13-2. Baylee O'Donnell was 4-for-4 and drove in five runs.

Thursday, UWS concluded the week with a pair of 4-1 wins, first over SUNY Potsdam, then over Alfred State.

Against Potsdam, Carly Stuckmayer and Peyton Bennett recorded two hits apiece, while Bella Garley allowed only one unearned run on six hits in a complete game pitching.

In game two, Garley threw three scoreless innings to finish off a win for Samantha Swartz, who allowed only one run on one hit in four frames.

Bennett was 4-for-4 with a triple and scored three times.

UWS, now 12-4 overall, is off until opening Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play at Martin Luther on Friday, March 28.

After starting the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a pair of wins, Wisconsin-Superior dropped five of its last six games last week.

Saint Joseph's (Maine) swept a doubleheader on Monday, March 10, 10-6 and 8-5.

On Wednesday, UWS picked up a 5-3 victory over Roger Williams. Third baseman Brian O'Dwyer was 3-for-4 and scored twice. Pitcher Josh Pritchard went five scoreless innings, though Roger Williams made it interesting by scoring three times in the ninth inning and bringing the tying run to the plate.

Thursday, a UWS comeback fell short in a 4-3 loss to Loras, Noah Dagostino and Devin Frydenlund had two hits apiece.

Friday, UWS outhit Greenville 8-3 but lost a tight 2-1 ballgame. Trey Sybrant and Maxton Howell had two hits apiece, while Ben Welle took a tough loss despite a solid outing allowing two runs in five innings. Relievers Christian Pretasky and Gio Basile didn't allow a hit or a run.

The trip concluded with a 5-3 defeat to Plattsburgh State, which took the lead with a three-run eighth inning.

Zach Romans pitched seven strong innings and got a no-decision, while Payton Steiner was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.UWS (5-9) is scheduled to begin UMAC play vs. Northland at NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Friday, March 21.

The Yellowjackets women's tennis team grabbed grabbed three of a possible four wins a four-match spring break trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama last week.

UWS swept Belhaven (Miss.) 7-0, took down Earlham 6-1 and Illinois Wesleyan 5-2 but St. Thomas (Texas) defeated them 5-2 to deny them a perfect week.

Wisconsin-Superior men's tennis picked off a 4-3 win over Illinois Wesleyan to complete their trip.

The Yellowjackets had earlier lost 4-3 decisions to Belhaven (Miss.) and St. Thomas (Texas) and were swept 7-0 by West Florida.
