Lady Jackets' rally comes up one short
Lee County softball has started the 2025 season with a very unfavorable schedule, and the Lady Jackets finally overcame it to get their first win of the season on Wednesday. They came a run short of a second win Thursday night, falling 6-5 on the road to a Triton team ranked in the MaxPreps top 10.
The Lady Jackets finally played a game at their Lou Layton Softball Complex on Friday night, 17 days and five contests into their season. Lee played them all on the road, dropping three games before downing Seaforth on Wednesday. On Thursday, down 6-3 at Triton after four innings, Lee battled back in the sixth and seventh but came up one short.
With two out in the top of the seventh, McKenzy McDougald drove a pitch deep to left field and circled the bases for a home run. With the Lady Jackets now within a run, Yasmin Quick followed with a single to left. Kendall Brewer stepped to the plate with a chance to tie or win the game, but Triton pitcher Addie Stanley was able to strike her out swinging. The Lady Hawks, now 5-1 and ranked No. 9 in the 3A East, held on for the win.
Lee had whittled the margin down to 6-4 in the sixth. Kallie Byrd hit a one-out double, and came in to score on some daring baserunning, scoring all the way from second base on a flyout by Cherish Smith.
Both teams had fireworks going in the second inning. McKenzy McDougald doubled on a 3-0 offering with one out to get the Lady Jackets started. After the second out, Brewer was hit by a pitch from Stanley, and then Byrd walked to load the bases. A single by Smith put the first run on the board before McKayla McDougald reached on an infield error that eventually led to both Byrd and Brewer scoring.
Unfortunately, the home team also had some mojo going when it took its turn. A walk, a single and an error loaded the bases for Triton with one out. An error brought a run in, but then the second out was recorded and Lee starting pitcher Hailey Hughes looked like she might escape the inning.
But it wasn’t to be, by the smallest of margins. The Hawks’ Cami Pope smashed a hard line drive to Lee shortstop Kasie Roberts’ right. She made what appeared to be a leaping snowcone catch, but as she came down, the ball popped loose, and Triton ended up pulling even before Hughes got the third out on a comebacker to the mound.
Triton added a run in the third, when Berkley Campbell and Sydney Bradham opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Both ended up scoring. A Bailey Johnson double followed by a Campbell single made it 6-3 after four.
Lee actually outhit the Hawks 7-6 and also had a 5-3 edge in walks drawn. Byrd had a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. McKenzy McDougald was 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Smith reached twice and drove in two runs.
Lee County hosts Richmond on Tuesday night.
