Mikel Arteta names the moment he knew Chelsea would be title contenders
Managers – especially those from the Pep Guardiola coaching tree – love flattering each other before they face each other, and today we’ve had a pretty intense example of that from Mikel Arteta.
The Arsenal boss faces off against fellow former Pep disciple Enzo Maresca tomorrow when Chelsea come to town, and in his press conference he was full of glowing praise for the Italian and the job he’s done in his first year at Stamford Bridge.
“From the moment I watched them play in pre-season, understanding how Enzo works and the talent they have in the squad, they were contenders to even win it from the beginning,” the Spaniard said, blowing up Maresca’s long held claim that his team were never in the title race.
“They have so much there. The moment that everything lies together and they find that connection, energy and consistency, I think they can compete with any team. He’s a magnificent coach,” Arteta added.
Arteta backs Maresca-ball to win titles and entertain fans
Maresca’s style of play is developing into something of an issue among Chelsea fans, with some bored silly by the passive passing and others insisting that it’s all part of the plan. Arteta made it very clear which side of the fence he’s on in this debate:
“He’s very clear what he wants to do, he’s been very clear what he wants and how he does it. I really like the way his team plays.”
Tomorrow’s game should be a really interesting battle between two teams with similar coaches who are both trying to get to the next level and start winning things. We’re sure there will be lots of hugs on the touchline, but both know it’s a huge 3 points up for grabs.
