Texas softball: No. 2 Longhorns roll to two wins in SEC-opening series against No. 3 Florida
In its SEC series debut, Texas softball made a statement to its new conference as well as the rest of the nation.
The No. 2 Longhorns (28-1, 2-0 SEC) totaled 20 runs and 23 hits while rolling to a pair of wins, 7-2 and 13-7, over No. 3 Florida (27-4, 0-2) in a Saturday doubleheader in Gainesville, Florida.
Katie Cimusz, a senior who started both games at first base, blasted two home runs and tallied four RBIs in the 13-7 victory. Catcher Reese Atwood had four total RBIs and a home run in the 7-2 win while becoming the first player in Texas history with at least 45 home runs and 175 RBIs. Third baseman Mia Scott went 4-of-7 with six RBIs over both games while extending her hitting streak to 16 games, the longest such streak for a Texas player since longest since Lindsey Stephens posted a 16-game hitting streak in 2014.

The offensive output between the two teams ranked atop in the nation – Florida has 255 runs while Texas is tied with UCLA at 231 - came as no surprise to Texas coach Mike White.
“I mean, these are two of the best offenses in the country, and we just hit the ball really well today,” he said. “Seeing all the other Texas athletic programs doing well in the SEC, we want to make sure we let everyone know that we belong in this conference. We’ve always loved watching the SEC, it’s a great conference. It’s good top to bottom and we love being in this conference.”
Cimusz, who fueled the Longhorns’ comeback from a 7-6 deficit in the fourth inning in the second game, said her team embraced the challenge of outslugging the potent Florida lineup.
“I think we just stayed within the game the entire time,” she said. “We didn’t let up and even when we were behind, we knew that we have what it takes to come back and win.”
Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan (11-1), the reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week, tossed 100 pitches in 4.2 innings of game one while striking out five and scattered five singles. She gave way in the bottom of the fifth inning to Mac Morgan, who went on to allow two singles and earn her first save of the season.
Kavan then came in to settle things down in the second game and allowed just one run in four innings of relief to earn her second win of the day.
After potential inclement weather Sunday shifted the schedule, the Longhorns (28-1, 2-0) will conclude the series against Florida Monday at 6 p.m.
