The Commanders own five draft selections in this year's NFL draft.
They own selections 29 (Rd1), 61 (Rd2), 128 (Rd4), 205 (Rd6), and 245 (Rd7). Commanders Wire has looked into how Washington has drafted around each of these positions, and now today we look and see what value the Redskins / Commanders have received when drafting around No. 245.
Washington last drafted as late as 245 in 2021, when it had two choices late in the seventh (final) round.
- Shaka Toney (246) in 2021. Toney was a quick (only weighed 230 pounds) edge rusher the Commanders attempted to develop. Exhibiting some real ability to bend and be flexible in his pass rushing, there was hope. However, Toney gambled, violating NFL rules, and was suspended for 2023. The new administration waived Toney. The Cowboys claimed Toney but then waived him during the 2024 preseason.
- Dax Milne (258) in 2021. Milne collected 15 pass receptions in his two seasons with Washington (2021-2022) but averaged only 8 yards per reception. He also returned 40 punts, averaging 7.8 yards per punt return.
- Jordan Brailford (253) in 2019. The Oklahoma State edge rusher was 6-foot-3, 252 pounds with a 37.5-inch vertical. Though he was an explosive athlete, he only appeared in five NFL games and was subsequently waived by Washington, Minnesota and Atlanta.
- Trey Quinn (256) in 2018. The SMU receiver was billed as a final-round steal by the Redskins. But Quinn caught only 35 passes in two seasons with Washington, averaging only 7.8 yards per reception. After Washington released Quinn, he appeared in one game with the Jaguars in 2020.
- Chris Neild (253) in 2011. The former West Virginia nose tackle appeared in 24 Washington games over his two NFL seasons. He made 16 combined tackles, 3 TFL, and 2 QB sacks.
- Chris Horton (249) in 2008. The former UCLA safety began quickly, starting ten games his rookie season, intercepting three passes and contributing 76 combined tackles, five passes defended, and five tackles for a loss. However, his play slipped his next two seasons. He only started five more games and was out of the league after the 2010 season.
