The Washington Commanders will bring in another kicker before the season. Despite re-signing Zane Gonzalez for next season, Washington worked out top kicking prospect Andres Borregales earlier this month. Borregales made 18 of his 19 field goal attempts during his final season at Miami, including a long of 56 yards.
Borregales isn't the only top kicker prospect the Commanders worked out. According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, Washington worked out Florida State kicker Ryan Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald also said he's had workouts with the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens.
"I’ve been excited to show these teams what I can do," Fitzgerald said. "We’ll see what comes of it."
Fitzgerald was FSU's kicker for the last five seasons, and made 58 of his 74 field goal attempts (78.4%), including a long of 59 yards last season. Fitzgerald made 178 of his 182 (97.8%) extra-point attempts in his career. Last season, Fitzgerald was perfect, making all 14 field goal attempts and 13 PATs. After struggling in 2022, he was outstanding over his final two seasons, combining to make 32 of 34 field goals and all 72 PATs.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Fitzgerald was a two-time All-ACC selection and earned All-American honors in 2024.
The Commanders had several kickers last season. They initially signed Brandon McManus but released him last summer due to an alleged off-field incident before he signed with Washington. The Commanders had different kickers throughout the offseason and training camp, trading for Cade York before the season, but he struggled and they released him after one game. Greg Joseph, Austin Seibert, and Gonzalez also kicked in games last season, with Gonzalez becoming the primary kicker in the second half of the season after Seibert's injury.
Gonzalez made five of his seven field goal attempts and all 19 of his PATs. However, there are concerns regarding his leg strength. Gonzalez will have a chance to be Washington's kicker again in 2025, but he'll have competition, whether it's a rookie or another veteran signed before training camp. Young kickers are clearly on GM Adam Peters' radar.
