What must happen for Jaguars to have chance at picking Travis Hunter in NFL draft?
What has to happen within the first four picks in order for the Jacksonville Jaguars to have a chance at landing Travis Hunter in the NFL draft?
This is a pick for the Jaguars in mock drafts that is seemingly becoming more popular as of late.
Early on in the pre-draft process, Hunter was frequently off the board before the Jaguars were on the clock. But in more recent mock drafts, there does seem to be a more realistic recipe for him being available at pick No. 5.
A recent mock draft from Josh Liskiewitz of Pro Football Focus illustrates that path. The right combination seems to be two quarterbacks being taken in the top three, Abdul Carter being the other top three selection, and the New England Patriots at pick No. 4 taking an offensive tackle.
In this scenario, which isn't too far-fetched by any means, Hunter is then on the board when the Jaguars are picking.
"As a cornerback, he brings good mirror-matching movements and truly elite ball skills," wrote Liskiewitz. "He can be a bit out of control and lacks some density, which gets exposed the most in press-man coverage. As a primary zone defender with press-man flexibility, he can be an immediate starting cornerback with an All-Pro ceiling."
How the Jaguars would utilize Hunter remains to be seen, whether he would primarily play offense, defense, or be asked to play both regularly. But either way, the Jaguars would be getting a highly productive talent.
As a receiver, Hunter caught an impressive 79% of his 121 targets, averaging 13.1 yards per catch with 15 touchdowns, according to PFF.
Then, in coverage last season, Hunter allowed a completion rate of only 56% on 41 targets and held pass-catchers to under 10.0 yards per catch. He also came away with four interceptions and seven pass breakups.
As the numbers illustrate on both sides of the ball, Hunter's ball skills are highly impressive and he would provide a big boost at two positions of need for the Jaguars.
Will Hunter actually be available when the Jaguars are on the clock? We will see, but a path for that to happen does seem to exist.
