USC baseball takes 2 of 3 games from Michigan, wins first Big Ten series

After a rough stretch that saw them lose six games in a row, USC traveled to Michigan for their first Big Ten road series this weekend looking to get back on track. The Trojans were able to do just that, taking two of three from the Wolverines to pick up their first Big Ten series victory.

On Friday, the Trojans jumped out ahead early, leading 7-1 after seven innings. Starter Caden Hunter continued his strong start to the year, allowing just one run on three hits over 6.2 innings. After the Wolverines cut it to 7-4 with three runs in the eighth inning, Ethan Hedges shut them down with a scoreless ninth to seal the contest.

On Saturday, USC got another excellent pitching performance from Caden Aoki. Aoki allowed just two runs on four hits over seven innings, and the Trojans rallied for four runs in the eighth to earn a 4-3 comeback victory and take the series.

Sunday was a completely different story, however. Pretty much nothing went right for USC, as Michigan jumped out to a 10-0 lead through four innings. With the Trojans trailing 11-0 after the top of the seventh, the game was called early to give them a jump on their travel back to Southern California.

While Sunday was a disappointing result, it was still a successful weekend for the Trojans. Traveling more than halfway across the country and playing several games that began before noon Pacific time, USC took two of three to win a Big Ten series for the first time.

The Trojans are back in action Tuesday night, when they head to Tempe, Arizona to take on old Pac-12 foe Arizona State. USC will return to Great Park in Irvine this weekend, when the Trojans welcome in Nebraska for a three-game series.
