5 players who make sense as 2nd round picks for the Philadelphia 76ers
While the Philadelphia 76ers are not sure if they will have a first-round pick until the lottery on May 12, there is one thing for sure, and that is they will have a second round pick in the 2025 NBA draft in June. They got their pick back from the Dallas Mavericks in the Caleb Martin-Quentin Grimes trade at the deadline.
With that being said, that second-round pick will be somewhere in the early 30s and there will be plenty of options for Philadelphia at that spot. The Sixers could use some youth to add to their supporting cast around Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George for the future.
Here are five options for who make sense for the Sixers in the second-round:
Ian Jackson, North Carolina
2024-25 stats: 12.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 0.9 apg, 46% FG, 40% 3-FG
Jackson has had an uneven freshman season with the Tar Heels, but he has an ability to self-create and can shoot the ball at a high level. He knocked down seven triples in a 2-game stretch in February against Syracuse and North Carolina State, but that came after he had scored in single digits in six of his previous seven games. He is a work in progress, but the Sixers could always use another shooter on the floor for spacing purposes.
Labaron Philon, Alabama
2024-25 stats: 10.9 ppg, 3.6 apg, 3.3 rpg, 45.7% FG, 30.1% 3-FG
Philon is a limited athlete, but he makes up for it with high basketball IQ. He grabbed attention this year with his ability to control the pace as well as make plays for others. The Sixers are always looking for ball-handlers for the second unit and Philon makes a lot of sense. Especially, as a second-round pick and somebody who can make things happen on the offensive end. He will be a great organizer for coach Nick Nurse to turn to.
Johni Broome, Auburn
2024-25 stats: 18.9 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 3.1 apg, 2.4 bpg, 51.3% FG, 28.9% 3-FG
One has to wonder if Broome will fall to the 34-35-36 range for the Sixers, but if he does, they have to grab him. He doesn't have a ton of upside due to his age--he'll be 23 by the time the draft rolls around--but he has a ton of skill that will make him tough to guard in the NBA. His footwork is impeccable, can finish around the basket, and is an elite interior defender which will make him attractive. His flashes of 3-point shooting and ability to drive will be a bonus as well.
JT Toppin, Texas Tech
2024-25 stats: 18.1 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.3 bpg, 54.8% FG, 32% 3-FG
Toppin is extremely productive around the basket as he has an ability to carve out space in the low post and use his soft touch to finish up and around taller defenders. He also is an elite and active rebounder as he can put back any misses and is improving as a rim protector. The Sixers have been looking to solve the never-ending problem of the backup big man behind Embiid and Toppin would fill that need almost right away. He would be in competition with Adem Bona for that role.
Chaz Lanier, Tennessee
2024-25 stats: 17.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.0 apg, 0.9 spg, 43.5% FG, 40% 3-FG
Lanier can be a specialist in the league. He shoots a high 3-point percentage on high volume (8.1 3FGAs per game) and he has the ability to get hot in a hurry. While he lacks offensive firepower and versatility, he makes up for it with an ability to shoot off movement, in spot-up moments, and can pull-up at any moment as well. There is a lot to like about Lanier and he night be worth taking a flier on in the second-round.
