The Cowboys trade draft picks with the Patriots for a new backup QB in Joe Milton

The 2025 NFL Draft is three weeks away, but we already have a Day 3 trade!

The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriotshave agreed to a deal that sends quarterback Joe Milton to Dallas. Per the NFL Network, the Patriots are shipping Milton and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft. The Cowboys hold three fifth-round picks (149, 171, 174), and it's not clear yet which of those picks is headed to New England.

Milton was the 193rd overall pick (sixth round) of the 2024 NFL Draft. The Tennessee grad, who started his career at Michigan, is known for his incredible throwing arm and overall athletic ability. Milton impressed in the Patriots' 2024 finale, a win over the Buffalo Bills in which Milton completed 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards and a TD, albeit against a Bills defense that was resting several key players for the postseason.

Dallas lost longtime backup QB Cooper Rush this offseason, so adding a young reserve behind Dak Prescott with intriguing athletic upside sure seems like a solid use of a fifth-round pick. Milton offers more than any quarterback the Cowboys could have drafted at that point.
