Steelers scouting report: QB Tyler Shough, Louisville
In case you haven't already heard, the Pittsburgh Steelers have just two quarterbacks currently under contract: Mason Rudolph and Skyler Thompson. Even if they do land Aaron Rodgers -- which seems more likely by the day -- they'll likely take a flier on a QB at some point in the 2025 NFL draft.
One option in another weak quarterback class is Tyler Shough, who had a pre-draft visit with the Steelers on March 9.
Here is what you need to know about the Cardinals star:
Name: Tyler ShoughCollege: LouisvilleHeight: 6-5Weight: 219Class: Senior40 time: 4.63
Stats:
Over his collegiate career, which included time at Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville, Tyler Shough threw for over 7,800 yards with 59 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions. He completed 63% of his passes and added over 700 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns, showing flashes of dual-threat capability.
Strengths:
Shough brings intriguing upside as a quarterback with a strong command of the offense and full-field passing ability when kept clean in the pocket. He shows solid timing working through his progressions and effectively uses his eyes to manipulate defenders at the second and third levels. His tape is filled with splashy arm talent — whether it’s a drive throw over the middle or a deep ball launched with an effortless flick of the wrist. Despite what the stats may suggest, Shough is a naturally accurate passer and demonstrates good awareness, quickly moving off his first read when pressure or danger arises.
Weaknesses:
While Shough has clear physical tools, his game comes with notable concerns. His operation time in the quick game can be sluggish, limiting rhythm-based throws. Under pressure, he often lacks the poise and mobility to navigate collapsing pockets, leading to inconsistent mechanics and off-balance throws. He occasionally struggles to let routes fully develop and falls off his delivery when facing heat. His gunslinger mentality, while aggressive, can result in risky decisions. Additionally, his ability to extend plays is limited, and durability is a red flag after missing significant time due to injuries in three straight seasons from 2021 to 2023.
Fits with Steelers:
Shough could be an intriguing developmental fit for Pittsburgh, especially under an offense that values big-arm talent and vertical passing. His ability to drive the ball downfield and manipulate safeties with his eyes aligns well with the Steelers’ desire to open their deep passing game. With a strong offensive line (which, as of 2024, was questionable at best) and improved protection, Shough could thrive in a system that allows him to work from the pocket and use his full-field vision. While he may not be ready to start immediately, his upside and physical traits make him a compelling backup or future starter option in Pittsburgh. Shough is a late-round option and will be 26 years old when the season starts.
