Chiefs scouting report: Penn State Nittany Lions TE Tyler Warren
The Kansas City Chiefs pick too low to select Penn State Nittany Lions tight end Tyler Warren in the 2025 NFL draft, but the team possesses enough top 100 picks to trade into the middle of the first round. Going all in for Travis Kelce’s long-term replacement seems too risky for general manager Brett Veach, but the draft brings plenty of surprises each year.
Warren spent most of his college career sitting behind future NFL tight ends Pat Freiermuth, Theo Johnson and Brenton Strange. He quickly surpassed all three once he stepped into the starting role. Warren amassed 104 receptions for 1,233 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024 on his way to earning Second Team All-America honors.
Warren’s alignment versatility ranks among the best in the 2025 class. He takes snaps in-line, the slot, out wide, at H-back and in the wildcat. At 6’5 1/2’’, 256 lbs., Warren offers prototypical size for the position. He didn’t test at the NFL Combine, but analysts expect good results at Penn State’s pro day.

Warren quickly releases from the line and flashes the speed to threaten defenses up the seam. His smooth lower body and loose hips help him generate natural separation as a route runner. He sells his routes with shoulder and hip fakes and manipulates the defender’s leverage to create separation.
Warren eliminated any lingering concerns about dropped passes in 2024. He’s a natural hands catcher who maintains a firm grip on the ball through contested catches. His arm length limits his catch radius, but his large frame makes him a viable jump ball option in the red zone.
Warren lacks elite burst and speed but possesses enough of both to threaten defenses after the catch. He’s a tough, competitive athlete who muscles through arm tackles and doesn’t shy away from contact after the catch. Warren offers passable blocking on wide zone plays and secures the backside of gap runs, but he lacks the elite power and technique to dominate the trenches.
Brock Bowers fell to 13th in last year’s draft despite being a versatile and dynamic pass catcher. Warren isn’t as athletic as Bowers. Unless a team in the top ten makes Warren the highest drafted tight end since Kyle Pitts, he could slide to the Denver Broncos at 20 or the Los Angeles Chargers at 22.
