Spartans hockey star named finalist for Hobey Baker Award

Michigan State star Isaac Howard has been named a finalist for the top award in college hockey.

Howard was announced as one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award on Thursday. The Hobey Baker Award is annually given out to the top player in all of college hockey. The other two finalists are Zeev Buium of Denver and Ryan Leonard of Boston College.

Howard is the first Spartan to be a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award since Ryan Miller in 2001 -- who also won the award that year.

The Hobey Baker Award will be officially handed out on April 11. There will be an award show on the NHL Network that will begin at 6 p.m. ET. There will also be a live stream available on the official Hobey Baker Award website.

Howard was the top player on the Spartans this season, leading the team in points (52), goals (26) and assists (26). He was the Big Ten Player of the Year and also earned Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player after leading the Spartans to a second straight Big Ten Tournament title.
