Sommer: ‘Inter not happy with defending recently’

Yann Sommer expects ‘a very interesting game’ between Bayern Munich and Inter, but admits they are ‘not happy with our defending’ in recent matches.

The first leg kicks off at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Wednesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“It is certainly an intensive match between two teams who like to keep the ball with a lot of quality. Both have a high press, so it will be a very interesting game,” Sommer told Sky Sport Italia.

“We expect a balanced encounter. Both have big squads, so Bayern are missing some important players and so are Inter.”

Despite stuttering at times defensively in Serie A, Inter have been rock solid in the Champions League, conceding just two goals in eight matches.

Is it a different level of concentration for the European nights that leads to such a big shift in their statistics?

“It is difficult to explain, but clearly, we are not happy with our defending in the recent Serie A matches. It is very important that we defend as a team tomorrow, to make it difficult for the opponents to create chances against us,” added Sommer.

“It has recently been a bit too easy for the other sides to create opportunities.”

That was particularly evident at the weekend when Inter fumbled a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Parma, so today if Napoli beat Bologna, the gap at the top of the table will be cut to just one point.

This is a return for the goalkeeper, who wore the Bayern Munich jersey in 2023 before his transfer to San Siro, so has he been in contact with some of his former teammates?

“I haven’t spoken to them before the game, as everyone is concentrated, but tomorrow I’ll certainly be glad to say hello.”
