Iowa State women's basketball: Cyclones sophomore Kelsey Joens enters transfer portal

As the Iowa State women’s basketball team stumbled through parts of the 2024-25 season, the Cyclones picked up some much-needed momentum late in the year when guard Kelsey Joens jumped into the starting lineup.

That boost is now gone.

Joens, a sophomore guard this past season, has entered the transfer portal, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told the Register on Monday. She has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The 5-foot-10 Joens averaged 5.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game during her Cyclones career. Joens appeared in 68 games for Iowa State, making 22 starts including 16 as a sophomore.

Joens was a star in high school, first at Iowa City High and then West Liberty. Joens was part of a highly touted recruiting class for the Cyclones and followed in the famous footsteps of her two sisters.

One of her older sisters, Ashley Joens, is Iowa State’s all-time leading scorer. Another sister, Aubrey, began her college career at Iowa State before transferring to Oklahoma.

Kelsey Joens had her share of memorable moments in Ames. She bounced in and out of Iowa State’s starting lineup throughout the season before earning a spot in the team’s starting five at the end of the season.

Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly praised Joens’ hustle and heart and credited her with having a hand in the Cyclones’ run of success at the end of the season.
