Scoring machines: Vote for the SouthCoast Girls Basketball Player of the Year

Winter Super Teams are on their way, but before we get there, we need help from our readers.

This year, our readers will help determine our players of the year in every sport.

Much like we did with the Male and Female Athletes of the Year, our readers will have a say in who our Players of the Year are. We've cut down the list of the best of the best into an even more elite group (no easy task). We limited each school to a maximum of one candidate.

Vote for our High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Reader votes will make up 25% of the tally, with Sports Editor Laurie Los Lee making up the rest of the vote.

Voting will conclude at 8 p.m. on Monday, April 21.

Kat Cheesebro, Dartmouth

The four-year starter had a record-breaking season as she became Dartmouth High’s all-time leading scorer with 2,058. She is just the second girls basketball player from the SouthCoast to surpass 2,000 career points and now holds the area’s record for most career points scored by a girls basketball player. As a senior, Cheesebro averaged 27.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.4 steals to help Dartmouth win a second straight Southeast Conference title, reach the Div. 2 Elite 8 and finish the season with a record of 20-3. Cheesebro was named the 2024-25 Dave Cowens Award winner.

Jai-Ana Silva, GNB Voc-Tech

The sophomore sensation was nearly unstoppable this year, averaging 22 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.1 assist and 2.9 steals to help the Bears qualify for the State Vocational and MIAA tournaments. She also knocked down 56 3-pointers. Silva scored in double digits every contest this season and had 14 games with 20 or more points, including a career-high 41 in the State Vocational semifinals. Through two years at Voc-Tech, Silva has amassed 917 career points.

Zaria Anderson, New Bedford

Anderson, a four-year varsity player and two-year starter, was named the Big 3 Conference MVP her senior year as she averaged 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.9 steals to help the Whalers capture a share of the conference title and qualify for the Div. 1 playoffs. Anderson was New Bedford High's Dave Cowens nominee and was one of three finalists for the award.
