It's been a quiet spring for Derek Carr, and it's easy to see why. The New Orleans Saints quarterback's future with the team has been in doubt ever since he last took a snap under center; a change in leadership with Kellen Moore replacing Dennis Allen as head coach only made his outlook murkier. But the Saints insured he would return for 2025 by restructuring his contract in March. Whether Carr wanted a trade or a split with New Orleans, and whether he likes it or not, he'll still be wearing black and gold in 2025.
And it's unfortunate that he hasn't been prouder to do so all offseason. Carr was one of the few people to throw a football in a Saints uniform over the last five years who didn't show up to promote New Orleans during the week leading up to Super Bowl LIX: Drew Brees, Jameis Winston, and both of his backups did with Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler all making the rounds on Radio Row, or shaking hands and posing for photos at fan events. Carr was conspicuously absent.
Carr's first public appearance since January came at Fresno State's spring game on Saturday, April 5. He and his older brother David, both Fresno State alumni, were seen walking around campus. That isn't too surprising. They're obviously proud to be former Bulldogs and they each live in the Fresno area with their families, training together in the offseason. But it says a lot that Carr couldn't be bothered to take a flight to New Orleans to talk about his favorite local restaurants before the Super Bowl or welcome Moore to the team facility (that duty fell to Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy).
It's clear the team Carr currently plays for isn't a priority for him. But when it's time to visit his old stomping grounds and reflect on how great he was in college all those years ago? He's got all the time in the world. Until he changes his attitude about that, his relationship with the Saints' fanbase is going to continue to be lukewarm at best.
