Italian clubs are waiting in the wings to offer Rasmus Hojlund a route back to Serie A if Manchester United decide to part ways prematurely.

It’s remarkable that selling the £64 million acquisition just two years into his Red Devils tenure is even a consideration, although it’s just a testament to how truly dire United’s transfer business has been over the last decade.

There remains an element of hope amongst those involved at the club that Hojlund will eventually come good, given he’s just 22 years old. However, he seems to have regressed more this term following a generally acceptable maiden season in England, in which he finished with 16 goals in all competitions.

He’s now on just eight goals in 2024/2025 in 42 appearances across all competitions, prompting fans to grow increasingly frustrated with each passing game that he offers nothing in attack. The Dane’s last contribution in the Premier League came against Leicester City – who have just created history by becoming the first English team to lose eight consecutive home games without scoring – on March 16. Prior to that, he hadn’t found the back of the net since the beginning of December.

You couldn’t really blame INEOS for looking to cash in on the striker while his value is still relatively high – especially if the interest is there. They didn’t sign off on his arrival in the first place, and likely wouldn’t have agreed to such a ludicrous £72m package had Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial takeover been finalised at the time.

On Thursday, Fabrizio Romano confirmed Hojlund has been garnering interest heading into the summer window. Should United green-light his departure, there will be options for him to ply his trade back in Italy, where he represented Atalanta for one campaign in 2022/2023.

“Serie A clubs are monitoring Rasmus Hojlund’s situation ahead of the summer transfer window,” the transfer reporter revealed.

“If Manchester United decided to sell Hojlund to bring in a new striker in the summer, Italian clubs would be ready to start concrete contacts.”
