In a surprising twist revealed by Real Madrid Confidencial, it appears that Dean Huijsen is not the first name on Real Madrid’s defensive wishlist this summer.

Despite recent speculation suggesting otherwise, the Spanish giants have identified Arsenal star William Saliba as their primary target to bolster their backline ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Real Madrid’s interest in Saliba makes complete sense, as the Frenchman has rapidly developed into one of the most consistent and complete centre-backs in Europe.

Strong in duels, technically adept, and positionally disciplined, Saliba fits the profile of a modern defender who can dominate at the highest level for years to come.

Real Madrid need a defender

Madrid have recognised the need to reinforce their central defence with one eye on the future.

While they still boast world-class talents, the ageing curve is beginning to pose concerns. Saliba, aged 24, represents both quality and longevity.

The obstacle, of course, lies in Arsenal’s stance. The Premier League side considers Saliba untouchable, having tied him down to a contract until 2027.

Mikel Arteta sees him as a cornerstone of their project. However, as Real Madrid have proven time and again, few clubs can resist when Los Blancos come knocking with ambition and financial muscle.

Huijsen: An excellent contingency

While Saliba remains the first-choice, Real Madrid’s fallback option in Huijsen is hardly a compromise. The young Spanish international has been on Madrid’s radar for some time

His performances have not only earned him a spot in the Spanish national team squad but also the admiration of top clubs across Europe.

Huijsen’s composure on the ball, aerial dominance, and positional intelligence make him a very attractive Plan B—especially considering his age and potential to grow into a world-class defender.

If Madrid are unable to lure Saliba away from the Emirates, pivoting to Huijsen would be a forward-thinking move consistent with the club’s recent transfer strategy focused on youth and projection.
