Raiders GM talks draft plans for offensive line

Both Raiders new GM Jonn Spytek and new head coach Pete Carroll have talked about their priority with building this team from the trenches out. From there, two questions come to mind; First of all, how they plan to prioritize it and secondly, whether they think they have the talent on the team they think can accomplish it.

Obviously, they're going to hold those cards close to their chest. But some tea leaves can be read based on their responses. The Athletic caught up Spytek at the owner's meetings in Palm Beach Florida to get his thoughts on the group.

As for guard, it's interesting he suggests Jackson Powers-Johnson would be competing at center. Mainly because that seems altogether unlikely. The former Rimington Award winner was a big get by the Raiders at the top of round two last year and was seen as their best center, but played left guard only as a matter of making sure the team fielded the best five.

Since then former starting center Andre James was cut, paving the way for JPJ to step into the job. I don't see a scenario in which he would lose that job to anyone anytime soon.

It does, however, make sense that Parham and Meredith would compete for the backup center job as well as one of the starting guard spots. I would also expect they look to add a potential upgrade at guard in the draft. Then that rookie could battle the other three for the two starting guard spots.

Left tackle is spoken for with Kolton Miller. Last year's third round pick DJ Glaze won the right tackle job and did an admirable job. Even still, Spytek here indicates the Raiders plan to use a draft pick on a tackle if one they like is there. Then Glaze would have some competition at the position. Of course, he doesn't say how high that pick would be, so it remains to be seen how much of a priority they are placing on it.
