Part of the deal in bringing Geno Smith to the Raiders from the Seahawks was that he was supposed to be getting an extension. The date in which Smith's guarantees for the 2025 season kicked in has long since passed. But that doesn't really matter much, because any new deal would likely eclipse that money anyway.
Just the same, it has been expected that Smith would get a new deal sooner than later and he would not be expected to start the offseason program without it.
Monday was the first day of the owner's meeting in Palm Beach Florida and the Raiders head coach Pete Carroll and GM John Spytek were on hand to take questions from the media.
One question that came up was the status of Smith's contract talks.

"We're working on it." Carroll told media on hand. With Spytek saying he was confident the deal would be done soon.
Smith's current deal only goes through this season and his $31 million salary is fully guaranteed. There could be a benefit on both sides to work out a new deal. For Smith it would mean future years of job security and likely a raise. For the Raiders, it would allow them to spread out his cap hit should they choose to do so.
Currently Smith's salary is 19th in the league which is the lowest among established starters not on their rookie deals. The Raiders still have plenty of cap space in order to give him the raise he is seeking along with the additional years on his contract.
