Over the Cap projects a Geno Smith contract extension

The Seattle Seahawks traded starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this offseason after struggling to discuss terms of a contract extension with him. Smith is currently scheduled to enter the final year of his contract. The Raiders will undeniably discuss extension with him.

The price for starting quarterbacks is consistently increasing. Smith's previous extension signed in Seattle paid him $25 million annually. That's significantly lower than what he'll demand from Vegas.

Over The Cap was recently answering questions on social media. When asked about a number on a potential Smith extension, OTC responded with roughly $40 million per season.

The Seahawks replaced Smith by signing Sam Darnold to a three-year contract worth approximately $33.5 million per campaign. If Smith lands $40 million annually with the Raiders, then the Seahawks would have saved roughly $7 million per season on their starting QB's contract.

The Seahawks made Darnold the 17th-highest paid QB in the NFL on a per season basis. If Smith signs an extension with the Raiders worth exactly $40 million per campaign, he'll become the league's 15th-highest paid QB, equaling Matthew Stafford at a per year annual average of $40 million.

The Seahawks are thankful they swapped Smith for Darnold this offseason.
