Roosevelt track & field swept the team titles at Friday's Weingart Invitational Under the Lights in Cleveland Heights.
The Rough Riders edged Perry by just six points, 148-142, on the boys side. Roosevelt junior Jaiden Portis delivered across a myriad of events, finishing second in the long jump (21 feet), fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.69 seconds) and fifth in the high jump (5-10). Portis also joined Adam Springer, Ke'Shan Talbert and Hasim White in the Rough Riders' championship 800 relay (1:34.64).
Juniors Braylon Hawthorne and Carter Stevenson finished 1-2 in the 1,600 run and senior Cor Asp and Stevenson went 1-2 in the 3,200, with Hawthorne also winning the 800 as Roosevelt thoroughly dominated the distance races. Rough Riders junior Kyle McQueen added a title in the 300 hurdles.
The Rough Riders won by a more comfortable margin on the girls side, topping the runner-up Pirates 158-121. Roosevelt won eight of 17 events, including three of four relays (the 200, 400 and 800).
Junior Kaidyn Harris won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump and was part of the Rough Riders' first-place 400 relay alongside Mahlia Friedman, Mikaila Kerr and Londan Portis. Pam Ntalah and Kenzie Zifchak added titles in the shot put and the 1,600, respectively.
Baseball
Garfield 5, Southeast 1
The G-Men (4-0, 2-0) held the Pirates to one run combined in this week's two-game series. After Aidan Hill's masterful performance Tuesday, Garet Warnick held Southeast to an unearned run on three hits in 5 ⅓ innings Friday. Warnick had nine strikeouts against four walks with Collin Cunningham getting the final two outs out of the bullpen. In a game that featured just five hits between the two teams, Garfield scored four of its five runs in the fourth.
Field 4, Canton Central Catholic 3
Down 3-0, the Falcons rallied with a four-run top of the sixth. Drexal McAmis doubled, singled and drove in two runs, while Joe Dilworth also doubled for Field (1-1). Landon Homan starred at the plate, with a single and two RBIs, and on the mound, with six strikeouts and no walks in his 3 ⅔ innings of relief to pick up the win.
Roosevelt 5, Orange 3
Aiken Benshoff picked up his first win, Garrett Polcha recorded his first save and the Rough Riders moved to 2-1. Six Roosevelt players had a hit, with Rocco Baggetta leading the way with two, along with a run and an RBI. Tristyn Page singled, walked twice, drove in a run and scored twice for the Rough Riders.
Windham 10, Chalker 1
Keegan Kiser tossed a three-hitter, with 16 strikeouts against two walks. Kiser got plenty of support at the plate as the Bombers scored three runs in the first and four in the fifth. Jack Eye and Dylan McCune had two hits and three runs apiece for Windham.
Windham 7, Chalker 3
