Layton Shaner won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0, on Wednesday to cap the Newark boys tennis team’s 4-1 victory against visiting Zanesville.
Evan Devries added a victory at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, for the Wildcats (3-0). Grayson Boyer and Viktor Glecker at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4, and Isaac Devries and Bradley Pastorius at No. 2, 6-0, 6-4, swept the doubles matches.
Watkins sweeps
Watkins Memorial did not drop a set in a 5-0 victory against Reynoldsburg.
Graham Smith, 6-3, 6-2, Michael Hare, 6-1, 6-1, and Wyatt Meade, 6-1, 6-0, won singles matches for the Warriors (3-0). Gavin Adelman and Nathan Walter, 6-0, 6-2, and Jeffrey Smith and Parker Carte, 6-2, 6-1, won doubles matches.
SOFTBALL
Lakewood rolls on road
Averie Adams was one of four players with three hits, and she knocked in five runs as Lakewood jumped to 6-0 with a 15-1 victory at New Albany.
Ashlyn Carder homered, and she, Briana Hoisington and Jaycie Montie added three hits each with that trio combining for five runs and three RBIs, and Carly Williams added two hits, four runs and three RBIs. Carder struck out three and scattered six hits.
Johnstown edged late
Grove City scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending visiting Johnstown to a 9-6 defeat.
Brooklyn Wood, Addy Zak and Lucia Kuhn each doubled with Wood and Zak combining to score three runs and Kuhn driving in three for the Johnnies (1-1). Riley Stefanick added a hit, two runs and an RBI and Ella Peterman a hit, a run and an RBI.
BASEBALL
Granville beats Academy
Jackson McMillan struck out seven and took a shutout into the seventh inning, pitching Granville to a 4-2 victory against visiting Columbus Academy.
McMillan allowed three hits and one earned run, and Luke Bosse struck out the final two batters to earn the save for the Blue Aces (3-1). Chase Holtzapple totaled two hits, a run and two RBIs, Cy Sims a hit and two RBIs and Lewis Turner a double and a run.
TRACK
Heights girls dominate
The Licking Heights girls won six individual running events and swept the three relays during a meet at Columbus Academy.
Double individual winners for the Hornets were Sabrina Bauer in the 100 hurdles (16.66) and 300 hurdles (49.31), Temiloluwa Jaf-ogunlayi in the 100 (12.28) and 200 (25.50) and Addison Caudill in the 800 (2:26.24) and 1,600 (5:18.89).
In the boys meet, Heights’ Alex Amartey won the high jump (6 feet, 1 inch) and discus (146-2). Other winners were Abel McGowan in the long jump (20-5.5) and Cayden Cross in the 110 hurdles (17.20).
