Overall champion Brignone also seals giant slalom title

Italian skier Federica Brignone crowned a phenomenal season with the World Cup giant slalom title after finishing second in the US resort of Sun Valley on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old had already wrapped up overall World Cup glory for the second time after 2020 and this season's downhill globe.

Brignone, who also won the giant slalom globe in 2020, was aided by previous giant slalom standings leader Alice Robinson of New Zealand skiing out in the first leg.

The Italian only needed to finish 13th in the second run to clinch the small globe, but went all out for race victory.

She was pipped by overall runner-up Lara Gut-Behrami, who led after the first leg, by just 0.14 seconds. It was a 100th World Cup podium for the Swiss. Sweden's Sara Hector was third in the race and third in the giant slalom standings.

It has been a crazy and amazing season for me," Brignone said. "I never thought I could ski like that. It is something magic."

Title-wise, it has been Brignone's most successful season of her career, less than a year before her home Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.

She also won the world championship gold in giant slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, in February.

The last women's race of the season is on Thursday when the slalom globe will be decided. Croatian Zrinka Ljutic leads Camille Rast of Switzerland, with Austrian Katharina Liensberger and Switzerland's Wendy Holdener also having outside chances.

US ski great Mikaela Shiffrin was not in the running for World Cup titles this year after an injury-hit season.

The men - whose season has again been dominated by Marco Odermatt - have a giant slalom on Wednesday in Idaho before Thursday's season-ending slalom, with the discipline globe also still up for grabs.
