Giants Getting Starting Quarterback Complicates Patriots Draft Plans
The saga involving 10-time Pro-Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson has ended with him signing a one-year, $21 million deal with the New York Giants, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
ESPN Sources: The Giants and Super Bowl-winning QB Russell Wilson reached agreement today on a one-year deal worth up to $21 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed. It comes just a few days after the Giants signed former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year, $8 million deal.
The Giants getting both Wilson and Winston now raises more questions on the No. 3 pick they have in the 2025 NFL Draft. They are unlikely to go for a quarterback, thus complicating matters for the New England Patriots, who follow the Giants with the No. 4 pick.
The Giants could likely draft Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter, Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell, or Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham (provided they aren’t selected by Tennessee at No. 1 or Cleveland at No. 2).
The Titans and the Browns could select the top quarterback in the draft, followed by the Giants’ pick at a non-quarterback. The Patriots would then take the best player available.
A realistic scenario arises where only Cam Ward (Miami) or Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) is selected within the first two picks and then a non-quarterback is picked by the Giants. By the time New England picks at No. 4, two of their targets might be gone.
The chances for the Patriots to trade out of the No. 4 pick have risen due to Wilson signing with the Giants. There have been discussions for the Patriots trading back to an elite-prospect needy team, but those chances have risen.
While the chances of the Patriots getting their most wanted player have decreased, they now have more options.
