Russell Wilson signs with Giants; could it impact NFL draft for Jaguars?
The New York Giants are signing quarterback Russell Wilson. Could this addition for New York have an impact on who is available for the Jacksonville Jaguars when they are on the clock in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft?
According to the NFL Network crew, this is a one-year deal for Wilson with $10.5 million guaranteed and could be worth up to $21 million.
The big question from the Jaguars' perspective is, does this signing change whether or not the Giants will take a quarterback with the third overall pick?
The fact that it's just a one-year deal for Wilson doesn't take the quarterback selection out of play for the Giants. If selected, that quarterback prospect could then have the opportunity to develop for a year before taking over as the starter.
The reason that this decision by the Giants could impact the Jaguars is that in order for a player, such as Travis Hunter, for example, to be available when Jacksonville is picking, the likely path is that two quarterbacks are taken in the top four., which would push Hunter down the draft board.
The other two picks then may have to consist of Penn State's Abdul Carter as another selection, and the Patriots adding an offensive tackle.
However, if the Giants, whose GM and head coach are in a position where they have to win games now, want to instead bolster the roster around Wilson with the third overall pick, that then means just one quarterback could potentially be taken ahead of the Jaguars, and the perhaps already difficult task of landing Hunter becomes more challenging.
Naturally, there are a lot of outside variables that impact a team's draft board, and what New York does or doesn't do isn't the only factor that can impact who is available when the Jaguars are picking.
But with that said, the Giants potentially not having as much of a need at quarterback now could have a ripple effect that the Jaguars end up feeling.
