Odermatt makes World Cup title official and clinches GS title as well
Loic Meillard led a Swiss podium sweep in a giant slalom in Norway as second-placed Marco Odermatt clinched a third straight World Cup title in the discipline and made a fourth overall crown in a row official as well on Saturday.
Slalom and team combined world champion Meillard won in Hafjell by .14 of a second over Odermatt and .23 over Thomas Tumler in another show of Swiss strength.
Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen came 16th which gave Odermatt a third discipline straight title with one race to spare as he leads Kristoffersen by 106 points, with a victory worth 100 points.
Kristoffersen had said he would not compete in the speed disciplines of downhill, and possibly super-g, at the finals which meant that Odermatt was already effectively assured of the overall title a fourth straight year.
He made it official on Saturday 635 points ahead of Kristoffersen with five races left.
Odermatt has also clinched a third super-g globe in a row and can wrap up a second straight downhill title as well next week at the World Cup finals in the United States, leading team-mate Franjo von Allmen by 83 points into the last race.
"It was a rocky path but it is phantastic," said Odermatt who won eight season races in his three disciplines after a slow start into the season.
Saturday's result was the third podium sweep in the World Cup season for the Swiss men, and they also have several one-two finishes, plus a sweep in the world championship team combined.
"It's not a given that things are going like this. We have to enjoy it," Meillard told Swiss broadcasters SRG.
"The last few seasons have gone very well. That has pushed the youngsters, they have tried to get better and have also pushed us veterans. That helps us reach a different level."
Giant slalom world champion Raphael Haaser of Austria had a heavy fall in the second run. He managed to ski to the finish and was traken to hospital for examinations.
A slalom is scheduled for Sunday in Hafjell.
