OU football RB Sam Franklin plans to enter 2025 spring transfer portal, per report

NORMAN — OU football has lost its third player to the spring transfer portal.

Redshirt senior running back Sam Franklin plans to depart the program, On3's Hayes Fawcett reported on Tuesday. Franklin's decision to transfer isn't surprising as he received just 18 carries last season.

Franklin's departure also comes a day after On3's Pete Nakos reported the Sooners are an early school to watch for Cal transfer Jaydn Ott, one of the best running backs in the country.

Oklahoma running back Sam Franklin (20) runs the ball for a first down in the second half of an NCAA football game between Oklahoma (OU) and Temple at the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024.

A former Tennessee-Martin standout, Franklin played in 12 games on special teams and in a reserve running back role for OU last season. He rushed for 132 total yards.

The Sooners have also lost tight end Davon Mitchell and defensive back Mykel Patterson-McDonald to the transfer portal.

OU has depth at running back with Jovantae Barnes, Xavier Robinson, Gavin Sawchuk and Taylor Tatum.

The spring portal window lasts from April 16-25.
