Missouri basketball freshman Peyton Marshall enters transfer portal shortly after center commits

One in, one out.

Missouri basketball freshman center Peyton Marshall announced Sunday afternoon via his X account that he is entering the transfer portal. The decision came shortly after the Tigers received a commitment from Arizona transfer big man Shawn Phillips Jr., who looks likely to fill in as the Tigers’ go-to option at the five in the 2025-26 season.

Marshall is the second player from Mizzou’s highly rated 2024 signing class to enter the portal after just one season with the team, following rookie wing Marcus Allen.

Three of Mizzou’s four incoming players via the transfer portal to date have addressed frontcourt needs, with Loyola Marymount forward Jevon Porter and Oklahoma big man Luke Northweather, both listed at 6-11, set to join the Tigers’ roster. UCLA guard Sebastian Mack also has signed with Missouri.

But, the addition of Phillips has changed the picture at center more than either of the two previous options, and thus likely changed Marshall’s path to minutes next season.

Both Porter and Northweather are likely to play stretch-four roles, shaping up as shooters and perimeter players more than traditional big men in head coach Dennis Gates’ offense. Trent Burns, a 7-5 ‘unicorn’ prospect, also fits that role due to his 235-pound frame and billed ability to shoot the ball.

Phillips, however, is much more of a like-for-like replacement for Josh Gray, who has entered the transfer portal is a surprising twist this offseason, as he seemingly does not have any remaining college eligibility. It appears unlikely that Gray will be eligible to play next season.

Marshall also fits into that category, with a 7-0, 300-pound frame that lends itself to the dirty work down low.

Phillips has been an efficient presence on the boards at each of his college stops, averaging a rebound every 3.7 minutes he has been on the floor in his college career. As a rookie at LSU, he averaged 2.2 rebounds in 7.5 minutes per game.

He has never taken a 3-point attempt in his college career, but had a 56.3% field goal percentage with Arizona State and averaged more than a block per game. Last season, Phillips averaged 5.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 17.9 minutes per game.

Marshall had a high ceiling, but looked like more of a project in his freshman campaign as he adjusted to the pace of the SEC. He was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2024 and ranked as the No 100-overall prospect by 247Sports’ composite recruiting rankings.
