Texas basketball loses guard to the transfer portal

After one season with the Texas LonghornsMalik Presley is entering the transfer portal. The Texas native redshirted the entire 2024-25 season and did not appear in a game. He spent his freshman year at Vanderbilt before joining the Longhorns.

During his only season with Vanderbilt, Presley appeared in 26 games, making five starts. He averaged 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds a game while shooting 42.9 percent from the field. While those statistics don't jump off the page, Presley did have a few impressive games. That included a career-high 11-point effort against Auburn.

Presley joins forward Devon Pryor as the only two Longhorns to enter the portal this offseason. Pryor has already committed to the Oregon Ducks. Presley could be a solid option for teams looking for a veteran depth piece. During his time at Vanderbilt, he made the most of his opportunities when he got on the court.

Over the last few weeks, the Longhorns roster has undergone a lot of turnover. In the portal, they have added Xavier wing, Dailyn Swain, Purdue forward Camden Heide, and Florida Atlantic center Matas Vokietaitis. That list could also soon include Lassina Traore, who was on campus for a visit on Friday.

While Presley could not flash his potential at Texas, he should still draw some interest in the portal. He will also be motivated to put a disappointing 2024-2025 campaign behind him. Regardless of the program he ends up with, Presley will get to show why he should get more playing time.
