HATTIESBURG — New Southern Miss football coach Charles Huff prioritized two expectations during Saturday's spring game. He wanted all of his players to stay healthy and to complete a thorough full-game day operation.
Huff tried replicating a game-day look at M.M. Roberts Stadium by having players go through team meetings, stay at hotels and have pregame meals together to prepare for the 2025 season. He said that a team bond is necessary with many transfers on the roster and new faces.
Better yet, Huff reported there were no injuries in a game that ended in a 7-7 tie.
His plans were a success.
"There's a lot that goes into just going out there and playing," said Huff, who was hired from Marshall after winning the Conference USA championship. "We got an opportunity today with the spring game to kind of put some of those things in place. So now, when we get to August, we're not spending time on what does this meeting mean?
"You've got to kind of walk through some of these things. It sounds very simple and very simplistic, but it's not. It's all new."
Southern Miss' wide receivers boost offense
While the Golden Eagles' run game was utilized Saturday, its passing game is what drove the ball down the field. Senior wideout Bralon Brown hauled in six catches and secured a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Senior receiver Davis Dalton recorded the game's first score after catching a 5-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone.
Dalton said after the game that new routes and schemes this team is creating are already looking more complete than past teams he's played for at Southern Miss.
Charles Huff will prioritize defense
The defense only allowed two touchdowns with steadily long drives. However, Huff said he wants to add more pieces in the transfer portal, focusing on the defensive line.
"We're probably going to attack the defensive line and the defensive side of the ball really, really hard, because we attacked the offensive side of the ball really, really hard in December," he said.
Huff's defense currently has 12 players from Marshall, with a majority of them being defensive backs.
There were also no turnovers forced during the game.
