There were bound to be spring injuries, and for the most part Notre Dame football has avoided them until Wednesday.
Mike Berardino of the South Bend Tribune posted on social media that redshirt freshman wide receiver Micah Gilbert broke his right hand on the first practice of spring. It clearly took a while for the news to be released, but he was expected to make a second-year jump after coming into the program as a 4-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
While he didn’t make a catch during his first season with the Irish, he’s one of the bigger targets on the roster. Hopefully, this is just a minor setback in what could be a breakout season for Gilbert.
Notre Dame does have two projected starters in Jaden Greathouse and Malachi Fields. There will be opportunities for Jordan Faison, Will Pauling, Cam Williams and others, so it’s very unfortunate that Gilbert suffered this setback.
