49ers' Kyle Shanahan on what Colts are getting in CB Charvarius Ward

At the annual NFL league meetings, San Francisco 49ers' head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about new Indianapolis Colts cornerback Charvarius Ward by The Athletic's James Boyd.

"They're getting a hell of a player," Shanahan said. "Mooney was awesome for us. Loved having him. I know he went through a lot of stuff this year. I was really impressed and earned a lot of respect with how he handled himself. I think it'll be good for him to get a new start, a fresh start, especially some stuff he went through this year.

"(The Colts) got a really good person and a very talented corner."

Ward is one season removed from being an All-Pro in 2023, where he had terrific ball production with five interceptions and 17 pass breakups, according to PFF.

But going beyond Ward's production and impressive body of work throughout his career, he is a really good fit for Lou Anarumo's defensive scheme.

Recently, Anarumo dissected some plays from Ward during his time with the 49ers. Along the way, Anarumo highlighted his playmaking ability, his length, awareness, and vision.

Ward is comfortable on an island, playing press coverage, and wants the opportunity to travel with the opponents' top wide receiver--all of which are elements at cornerback that are important to making Anarumo's defense go.

Along with what Ward brings on the football field, he also brings a winning background to Indianapolis as well, something that there isn't a lot of on this roster. Ward won a Super Bowl in Kansas City and appeared in another with the 49ers.
