Nets' Cam Thomas has left hamstring strain; likely to be season-ending
The Brooklyn Nets began this season as an overachieving team trying to rebuild, but their pace was slowed down due to injuries. Coming out of the All-Star Break, Brooklyn was hoping to make a run for the Eastern Conference play-in tournament, but they will have to do so most likely without their best scorer.
The Nets announced just hours before Saturday's game against the Boston Celtics that guard Cam Thomas has a left hamstring for the third time this season. Brooklyn's press release stated that Thomas suffered the hamstring injury in Thursday's 116-110 loss at the Chicago Bulls, a game in which he had arguably his best game as a member of the Nets.
In 33 minutes on the floor, Thomas put up 24 points, six rebounds, and 10 assists, notching the first double-double in his career to show the force that he could be on the offensive end of the floor. In what could have been some unintentional foreshadowing to Thomas' injury, head coach Jordi Fernandez said after the game that Thomas looked like he was running out of gas in the second half, but that statement was most likely about his conditioning.
Either way, the Nets will be without their best scorer for the time being and it's possible that Thomas could be shut down for the reminder of the season. "Given the number of days remaining in the schedule and the time needed to appropriately recover, it is expected that Thomas will miss the remainder of the season," the team said, via its press release.
Thomas, 23, has mostly struggled with injuries this season as he has played in just 25 of Brooklyn's 66 games this season with most of his time missed due to that left hamstring. If this is the end of Thomas' season, he heads into restricted free-agency averaging 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land.
