Nets' Jordi Fernandez gives details on Cam Thomas' hamstring injury
NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets were hit with some unfortunate news on Saturday as they announced that guard Cam Thomas is expected to miss the rest of the season with his left hamstring injury. While there is a possibility of Thomas returning before the end of the regular season, it seems unlikely to happen and head coach Jordi Fernandez gave more details on what happened to Thomas.
"Disappointed. We feel for him. Obviously, it's not something that we wanted. We'll support him through the rehab, we know he'll be back," Fernandez prior to Saturday's game against the Boston Celtics. It seems that Thomas will miss the rest of the season as Brooklyn's season seems to be destined for them to miss the Eastern Conference play-in tournament, giving the team less of an incentive to bring Thomas back.
"I don't know the details. I know it's the same one and I know it was the last step-back three, last play of the game," Fernandez explained. "Very unfortunate because he's trying to make a push right there, trying to help the team, and he re-injured the same hamstring. Once again, not something we want to see. We're here to support him, and we'll get him back healthy."
As Fernandez explained, Thomas suffered his latest left hamstring strain in Thursday's 116-110 loss at the Chicago Bulls as Brooklyn was trying to mount a comeback in the final minutes of the game after blowing another double-digit lead. What Thomas' injury even worse is that he was coming off arguably one of his best games in a Nets uniform as he put up 24 points, six rebounds, and 10 assists for the first double-double of his career.
What is concerning for Thomas is that this is the third time that he has suffered a left hamstring strain this season, causing him to play in just 25 games this year. Prior to this season, Thomas played in at least 57 games in each season, including his rookie season when he played 67. With how much Thomas has struggled with the hamstring, it's fair to wonder if Thomas has to do something to address the issue, either through surgery or changing his training regiment.
"I don't know. From what I've been told this, the process going to start soon, but I don't have any details on that," Fernandez explained. "I don't have the qualification for that, but for sure, we'll do what's best for him. We'll work with him and his group, and we'll get him back healthy, which is the most important thing. We're not concerned about the type of injury, per se."
