Nets' Cam Thomas is 'all over the place' as he heads into free-agency
Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has been one of the more interesting plays on the Nets the past couple of seasons given that he's shown that he's one of the better scorers in the NBA. While Brooklyn is still trying to make the most of this season, the upcoming offseason will also be pivotal for their rebuild, especially when it comes to Thomas' impending free-agency.
"Cam Thomas' restricted free-agency. He's probably the biggest wild card in free-agency," HoopsHype's Michael Scotto said during his appearance on "The Putback" with SNY's Ian Begley and Knicks fan Anthony Donahue. One of the topics discussed on the show was the future of the Nets as this season comes to an end and Scotto brought up a good point about Thomas being arguably Brooklyn's most important, and unpredictable, free-agent.
"If you ask any executive, scout, anybody, what do they think he can get? The numbers are all over the place," Scotto explained. As of this writing, Thomas will enter free-agency as a 23-year-old guard that has averaged at least 22.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game while shooting at least 44.2% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land over the past two seasons.
To get an idea of where Thomas ranks amongst potential 2025 free-agents, Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus ranked Thomas as the 21st-best free-agent in the class, putting him behind Phoenix Suns guard Tyus Jones and ahead of Atlanta Hawks center Clint Capela. As Scotto noted, plenty of pundits have discussed what Thomas' next contract will look like, especially earlier this season when he was eligible for an extension that both sides couldn't come to an agreement on.
Judging of what some have said that have weighed in on Thomas' market value, it seems like a contract ranging from $20 million per year to $30 million per year is in the cards. The crazy thing about free-agency is you never know what a player is going to make until an insider reports the deal. While Thomas has more games to show what he can do as the team hopes for the play-in tournament, many will be wondering what he will command on the somewhat-open market.
I thought this was interesting to hear from Michael Scotto on Nets guard Cam Thomas:
